Vitiligo or Leucoderma is a skin condition in which skin looks white due to the depigmentation. There are various reason for depigmentation of the skin. It can be caused by a number of local and systemic conditions. That depigmentation turns out our natural skin into white patches. This is called vitiligo and It can be temporary (such as from tinea versicolor) or permanent (such as from albinism). There are total 1% to 2% of the population can affect from vitiligo and it could be more. This condition can also affect mucous membranes and the retina of the eye. The hair may also turn white grows in areas affected by vitiligo.

The fungus Malassezia is a kind of yeast found on the surface of the skin. It commonly does not cause any health problems. In fact, the yeasts like Malassezia, live in large communities on your skin to protect you from infections and other pathogens that can cause harm or disease. They live along the side of your body’s cells in the symbiotic affair, with skin cells and tiny organisms aiding and promoting each other.

Frequently, however, this yeast can grow out of control and disturb the natural color or pigmentation of your skin. When this takes place, you may develop patches of skin that are lighter or darker than the neighboring skin. This condition, which is not contagious, is known as tinea versicolor, or pityriasis versicolor. The condition arises when a type of yeast from the Malassezia family causes an infection or overcome your immune system.

Albinism is an inherited disease symbolize by a considerably lower rate of melanin production.

Melanin is the pigment provides pigmentation for skin, hair, and eyes.

Almost, but not always, people with albinism have lighter colored skin and hair than the other members of their family or ethnic group.

Disregarding of skin or hair tone, people with albinism always have some level of dysfunction with their vision.

Because melanin basically assures the skin from UV (ultraviolet) damage, people with the disorder are more conscious to sun exposure.

In our body, we have skin cells called melanocytes which are responsible for producing the pigment that gives the skin its color. Melanocytes produce melanin which is the pigment and it provides pigmentation for skin, hair, and eyes. When the melanocytes are destroyed or depigmented, skin cells appear white, and this causes vitiligo.

The reason for the loss of pigment from various parts of the body is not well understood. People with a family history of vitiligo are more likely to have the condition. However, these are the causes that are mentioned below are also responsible for vitiligo:

  • An autoimmune disorder – the patient’s immune system becomes overactive and destroys the melanocytes 2
  • Genetic oxidative stress imbalance
  • A stressful event
  • Harm to the skin due to a critical sunburn or cut
  • Exposure to some chemicals
  • A neural cause
  • Heredity – family link
  • A viral cause

The basic symptoms of vitiligo are the appearance of white spots or patches anywhere on the skin. Mostly, the first white spot that becomes observable is an area of the body that is exposed continuously to the sun.

At first, the vitiligo starts as a simple spot, a little paler than the rest of the skin. But circumspectly, as time passes, this spot will become much paler until it becomes white. People often notice the loss of pigment on the face, lips, hands, arms, and feet.

The shape of these patches are completely irregular, and, at times, the edges can become a little inflamed with a slight red tone, sometimes resulting in itchiness. Other than the appearance of the spots and occasional itchiness, vitiligo does not cause any discomfort, irritation, soreness or dryness in the skin.

In addition to giving skin its color, melanin also protects the skin from the sun. Lack of pigmentation in the skin may lead to a greater risk of sun sensitivity in the affected areas. Vitiligo increases the chance of sunburn and the development of skin cancer in people with the condition.

The situation in the first four months was highly encouraging. Now the white spots in the body are not increasing but the extension of the spots on the hair covered part of the head has not been stopped. The spots on the nose are on control and the improvement process is satisfactory. There were so many white spots on the both legs but now more than fifty percent is cured and remaining are turning slowly into darker. The finger tips of the left hand are satisfactory but in the second four month, the improvement on the right hand is not satisfactory.
